Corn Bandits
As a child one of my favorite movies was Time Bandits. It may have been the chaotic nature of the film or the idea of jumping through time itself was so satisfying. Of course the off hand crazy characters that the former Monty Python included definitely helped. As an adult I have found the chaotic nature of the small actors amazing.
Unfortunately, I have had to many run ins with small rodents like the 3-4 that have been eating my corn. The corn from my mound experiment. I go out for the weekend for my other gig and return to find my corn torn down and half eaten (see below). Now I understand the circle of life and the needs of all animals. But I swear that I am being targeted by them. There is 6 acres of sweet corn less than 1/4 of a mile away but noooooo, they decided to target my corn.
So I have decided like the ultimate evil to make a plan for their destruction and capture. And if that doesn’t work I will be building fencing to go around the mounds to preserve the sweet corn I have left in the other three mounds.
While we wait to see if our many efforts are successful, we have begun harvesting or lifting our first batch of beets, turnips, garlic and some of our onions. We plan on pickling the turnips and beets, while drying the onions and garlic for storage, use and next years planting. I am really looking forward to experimenting with pickled turnip and radish recipes. That was one of my favorite foods in Korea. Until then keep working with a mind to the harvest. Deven
